Mount Gambier is a sizeable city on the slopes of the eponymous dormant volcanic mountain of Mount Gambier, South Australia. Known for its volcanic and limestone features and Blue Lake, a large lake within a volcanic crater. The land was originally inhabited by the Bungandidj aboriginal people, and first saw European settlement in 1842 by the Henty brothers. A post office opened in 1846, with the locality being known at the time as ‘Gambierton’ but reverting to the name of Mount Gambier by 1878. The town officially became a city over 100 years later in 1954. Today, it is a significant centre for tourism in South Australia and the second most populous city in the state.
Historically, Mount Gambier’s economy was primarily comprised of the mining and agriculture sectors, however in recent years it has significantly diversified and much of the economy is now rooted in tourism, with Mount Gambier acting as a major accommodation gateway to the surrounding region, as well as being a beautiful location worthy of tourism in and of itself. Full of breath-taking geographical features and with excellent public amenities, Mount Gambier is an excellent place to own property.
