Woolgoolga has the privilege of being the home of Australia’s largest Sikh population, with 13% of the 5200-strong population identifying as practicing Sikhs; the town also features two Gurdwaras.
The town was first officially gazetted in 1888 under the name ‘Woogoolga’, a corruption of ‘Wiilgulga’, a term used by the Gumbaynggirr Aboriginal people to describe the region – a name which would later be altered slightly in 1966 to its current form.
